Install ASFireWire.
Follow these steps on the Mac where you will test the driver. The current tester install requires macOS 26 on Apple silicon and changes system security settings.
Download beta.4 tester ZIPCurrent prerelease: v0.4.0-beta.4. Read the beta.4 release notes first, or browse older releases.
What you need
- An Apple silicon Mac running macOS 26 (Tahoe).
- An Apple Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter chain suitable for your device.
- The tester release ZIP, extracted on the Mac where ASFireWire will be installed.
For FireWire 800 devices, the maintainer's documented adapter chain is Thunderbolt 3 → Thunderbolt 2 → FireWire 800. See the hardware compatibility notes for current host reports.
Use macOS Recovery
- Shut down the Mac. Press and hold the power button until startup options appear.
- Choose Options, then open Terminal from the Recovery menu.
- Run
csrutil disable, then restart into macOS. - Open Terminal in macOS and verify with
csrutil status.
The installer also enables system-extension developer mode after SIP is disabled. These two states are required by this tester install path.
Run the bundled installer
Extract the release ZIP, open Terminal, and run the installer from the extracted folder:
cd ASFW-<version>
chmod +x install.sh
./install.shThe script checks SIP, enables system-extension developer mode, removes the download quarantine, signs the driver extension and app locally, checks embedded entitlements, copies ASFW to /Applications, and opens the app. It asks before replacing an existing copy.
This site currently hosts the installation instructions, not the release ZIP. Use the tagged tester release package for the version you intend to install; do not substitute an older package without checking its release notes.
Install in ASFW
- Click Install in the ASFW app.
- When macOS asks, approve the system extension in System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions.
- In Terminal, run
systemextensionsctl list. Look fornet.mrmidi.ASFW.ASFWDrivermarked[activated enabled].
Uninstall, then re-enable SIP
Remove the extension from the ASFW app. If needed, use Terminal:
systemextensionsctl uninstall - net.mrmidi.ASFW.ASFWDriverConfirm that the extension is no longer listed. Then boot into macOS Recovery, run csrutil enable, and restart. Deleting ASFW.app alone does not uninstall the system extension.
Record what happened.
Use the on-site form to describe the result and attach diagnostic logs if you have them.
These steps summarize the current tester release procedure. Release packaging and requirements can change; check the version you install.
